Description
Bittern’s Wings: study showing both sides, a watercolor in the manner of Albrecht Dürer, places two views of a bird’s wing against an uncluttered, pale ground. Warm brown feathers in one view contrast with the cooler gray tones of the other. Layered rows of plumage create a quiet pattern, revealing the different textures and shapes within a seemingly simple natural subject.
Dated 1515 and painted on vellum, the study belongs to a tradition of close observation associated with Dürer. Its interest is in the patient description of feathers, from the broad flight feathers to the softer covering above them. The paired arrangement turns an anatomical comparison into a balanced and absorbing image of the natural world.
