Description
In San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk, Claude Monet turns a familiar Venetian skyline into a shimmering encounter between light and water. The church and its tall bell tower emerge as violet silhouettes, while gold, rose and turquoise flicker across the lagoon. Solid architecture seems almost to dissolve into the evening air.
Painted in 1908, the work belongs to Monet’s exploration of Venice during his visit with his wife, Alice. Their evening gondola outings offered a changing spectacle of sunset color. Rather than describe every architectural detail, Monet lets the reflected sky and loose, overlapping brushstrokes carry the scene. The distant dome of Santa Maria della Salute is faintly visible toward the right.
Also known as San Giorgio Maggiore, Twilight, this version is held by National Museum Cardiff. San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk offers both the grandeur of Venice and the quiet intimacy of watching the day end beside the water—a luminous landscape whose colors invite a closer, slower look.
