Description
Nonchaloir (Repose) by John Singer Sargent turns a quiet moment into a study of light, fabric and ease. A young woman reclines across a sofa, her hands loosely joined and her head resting against its back. Ivory folds and a patterned shawl spill across her lap, while the silvery skirt catches touches of blue, green and warm reflected light.
Painted in 1911, the work depicts Sargent’s niece, Rose-Marie Ormond. The informal pose gives the picture a different character from his grand commissioned portraits: the sitter seems absorbed in her own thoughts, with little sense of performing for the viewer. A gilded table and the picture frame above her add warmth to the subdued interior.
Broad, assured strokes make the cloth feel both substantial and shimmering. Dark passages around the sofa deepen the luminous whites, and the long sweep of the reclining figure gives the composition an unhurried rhythm. In Nonchaloir, Sargent’s painterly brilliance serves a mood of intimate stillness.
