Description
John Singer Sargent’s Cashmere arranges a sequence of women wrapped in pale, shimmering shawls against a muted landscape. Some face outward, while others turn or move away. The folds catch warm light, giving the repeated figures a soft, luminous presence.
The image’s rhythm comes from variations in stance and drapery. Long vertical folds alternate with curved edges and turned shoulders, making the group feel almost processional. Sargent lets the shawls’ changing surfaces carry much of the painting’s movement and subtle color.
