Description

A Bridge and Campanile, Venice by John Singer Sargent presents the city from the intimate viewpoint of its canals. A pale stone bridge arches across the water, while a slender bell tower rises beyond the warm-toned buildings. A dark boat near the foreground gives the eye a resting place among the shimmering reflections.

Dating from 1902 to 1904, the watercolor combines broad washes with brisk touches of darker pigment. Cream and peach passages suggest sunlight on masonry; blue-green shadows and broken gray reflections enliven the water below. Unpainted areas of the paper become highlights, allowing the scene to breathe without a sharply defined sky.

The bridge’s rising curve links the nearby canal to the tall campanile, creating a graceful exchange between horizontal movement and vertical height. Sargent leaves many details open, yet the architecture remains convincing through its proportions and shifting tones. A Bridge and Campanile conveys Venice as a place of passing light, reflected color and close encounters with water.
