Description
Christ presides above the world in The Last Judgment, flanked by kneeling figures and angels sounding trumpets. Far below, the dead rise and gather into opposing groups, creating a second register of intense movement. Light radiates around the seated judge, while clouds separate the heavenly assembly from the unsettled scene beneath it.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut from The Small Passion brings a vast subject into a compact, clearly divided composition. The stillness of the upper figures contrasts with the urgent gestures below, and the trumpets connect the two realms. The image’s power comes from this difference in scale and movement: solemn authority above, human vulnerability and response across the ground.
