Description
The Opening of the Fifth and Sixth Seals is a woodcut by Albrecht Dürer dating to about 1497–98. The image brings together two stages of the Book of Revelation: the martyrs revealed with the fifth seal and the upheaval that follows the sixth. Heavenly recognition and earthly terror unfold within a single visionary scene.
At the top, souls receive robes near an altar; below, the human world faces a catastrophe extending across the sky. This division gives the composition its dramatic tension, linking reassurance for the martyrs with fear among those beneath them. Dürer organizes successive events through contrasting levels rather than reducing the subject to one isolated moment. The Opening of the Fifth and Sixth Seals makes the relationship between heaven and earth central to its account of judgment.
