Description
Saint John the Baptist and Saint Onuphrius by Albrecht Dürer brings two ascetic figures together in a wooded setting. Their bodies, clothing and long hair give each a distinct presence, while a large tree frames the gathering at the right. Plants and uneven ground extend the scene around them, making their meeting feel rooted in a living landscape.
Made around 1503, the woodcut joins devotional identity with an attentive description of the natural world. The saints’ upright shapes contrast with the twisting trunk and branching foliage, giving the small composition both order and movement. Dürer’s varied textures keep the figures from becoming merely emblematic, allowing their physical presence and the rugged setting to deepen the scene’s contemplative character.
