Description

Four avenging angels sweep through a crowded earthly scene with raised swords, their powerful bodies crossing in urgent diagonals. Above them, further heavenly figures stand around an altar amid clouds. The lower gathering includes people collapsing or turning beneath the armed wings, making the distance between heavenly judgment and human vulnerability sharply visible.

Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut transforms the apocalyptic episode into a dense pattern of movement. Wings, blades and billowing clothing create a restless rhythm across the foreground, while the upper register offers a more ordered assembly. Every small figure contributes to the scale of the upheaval. The contrast between these regions gives the image its dramatic force, drawing the viewer from the calm authority above to the tumult unfolding below.
