Description
Salome receives the severed head of Saint John the Baptist beside a table laid for a feast. The richly dressed figures occupy a close domestic interior, where a seated man watches beneath the exposed ceiling beams. A curtain hangs behind the gathering, while vessels on the table and floor make the setting feel ordinarily inhabited despite the disturbing presentation.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut brings the story’s violence into the measured gestures of an indoor ceremony. Salome’s extended arms and the responding figure connect the head to the company at the table, making the moment difficult to overlook. Dense lines describe fabric, timber and faces, creating a contrast between the elaborate comfort of the room and the human cost of the event unfolding within it.
