Description
A haloed figure stands beside a boat crowded with figures as a threatening presence looms above the water. A seated figure occupies a broad arching form across the middle of the scene, while vessels and distant buildings establish a busy shoreline setting. The compact image combines recognizable bodies and boats with a more unsettling symbolic drama.
This woodcut by Albrecht Dürer is catalogued as an illustration from Sebastian Brant’s Ship of Fools. Its crowded arrangement gives the page the lively character of a book illustration intended to be examined alongside text. Strong outlines separate figures, water and vessels despite the small format. The combination of maritime imagery and sacred figures makes the scene engaging while leaving room for the literary context to guide its more particular meanings.
