Description
The Virgin and Child Crowned by Two Angels, by Albrecht Dürer, presents the sacred pair within a closely cropped circular view. Mary holds the infant while two angels approach above her head with a crown. The broad folds of her robe fill the lower field, giving the mother and child a firm, intimate presence beneath the lighter movement overhead.
The woodcut’s design dates to around 1504; this represented example has been trimmed so that the larger landscape is absent. The narrowed view brings attention directly to the faces, hands and ceremonial gesture of the angels. Dürer’s clear arrangement allows heavenly honor and maternal tenderness to coexist, making the scene compelling through the relationship of its figures rather than through an expansive setting.
