Description
The Beast with Two Horns Like a Lamb by Albrecht Dürer gathers a visionary scene of strange creatures, heavenly signs and earthly witnesses. The fantastic forms fill the foreground and middle distance, while radiant movement above opens the image into another realm. Closely worked bodies, wings and clouds give the composition an elaborate, unsettled energy.
From The Apocalypse, this woodcut is represented by a Latin-edition impression catalogued around 1511. Dürer organizes the dense vision through opposing directions and sharply distinguished outlines, allowing its many parts to remain readable. The image rewards patient looking at the relationship between the assembled figures and the fantastic presences around them, turning an apocalyptic subject into a richly textured world of movement, confrontation and revelation.
