Description
In this woodcut by Albrecht Dürer, Christ stands above the tomb with a banner, his radiant head and flowing garment drawing attention away from the troubled figures below. Soldiers bend, turn and look upward around the stone setting, creating a restless counterpoint to his upright presence. The Resurrection presents victory over death through a sharp contrast between the central figure’s composure and the earthly confusion surrounding him.
From the Small Passion, also known as the Little Passion, the woodcut makes the event immediate through strong outlines and tightly gathered gestures. The banner and raised arm open the upper space, while the lower figures remain close to the heavy tomb. Light and dark reinforce that change of atmosphere. The composition’s emotional strength comes from the movement out of enclosure, allowing triumph to remain connected to the physical world it has transformed.
