Description
The Expulsion from Paradise by Albrecht Dürer shows Adam and Eve leaving the enclosed world of Eden before an angel. Their exposed bodies contrast with the angel’s broad robes and emphatic gesture, while trees and surrounding growth make the scene feel closely framed. The opposing directions of the figures give departure and loss a clear visual form.
This example comes from the Venetian edition of The Small Passion published in 1612. The strong woodcut lines keep the biblical episode direct, distinguishing bodies and drapery against the darker vegetation. Dürer’s composition concentrates on the transition between shelter and departure, allowing the familiar story to emerge through a small number of clearly related figures and a landscape that holds the memory of the place being left.
