Description
This interlaced roundel by Albrecht Dürer, after designs associated with Leonardo da Vinci or his workshop, places an Amazon shield at the center of a densely woven ornament. Pale strands cross a dark circular field, forming successive bands around the small emblem. Leaflike motifs at the corners extend the pattern outward into the surrounding square.
Made before 1521, the woodcut invites the eye to trace a network that seems both strictly organized and continually moving. The shield gives the intricate paths a clear center, while the strong contrast makes their crossings readable. The design’s fascination lies in that meeting of balance and complexity, turning a decorative pattern into an absorbing study of continuity, repetition and carefully controlled visual rhythm.
