Description
Christ stands among armed guards before a seated high priest who grips his robe at the chest. A soldier raises his fist beside the prisoner, while a dog rests on the steps below. The crowded figures and raised seat emphasize the confrontation between the restrained prisoner and the authority judging him.
The image translates Dürer’s narrative design into the finely worked lines of engraving. The scene’s emotional force comes from the contrast between the guards’ activity and Christ’s restraint. Closely spaced marks distinguish fabric, bodies and the surrounding setting, keeping the story vivid at a small scale. This later interpretation preserves the direct emotional appeal of the composition while remaining a work after Dürer.
