Description

Dancer Adjusting Her Slipper shows a ballet dancer bending toward her foot in Edgar Degas’s drawing, her dark bodice contrasting with the lightly outlined tutu. Crossed legs and the downward reach turn the body into a momentary arrangement of angles. The subject shifts attention from ballet’s spectacle to a small practical movement, revealing something of the concentration and physical work behind the performance.

Made in 1873 in graphite with black and white chalk, the drawing was squared for transfer into another composition. Degas used this figure in his later ballet scenes, including the pastel Dancers Resting. The sheet’s appeal comes partly from seeing a gesture given such close attention before it joins a larger scene. The dancer remains an individual absorbed in a task, while the drawing reveals how carefully Degas built the appearance of informal moments.
