Description

Edgar Degas’s Little Girl Practicing at the Bar turns ballet practice into a study of physical concentration. The dancer stretches a leg toward the left while holding the barre, her loosely indicated dress set against diagonal floorboards. The working posture matters more than theatrical display. The barre provides a point of reference for the body, making balance and position central to an image concerned with the exercise itself.

Made around 1878–80, the drawing combines black chalk and graphite with white chalk on pink paper. Dark and light marks offer different ways of establishing form, while the colored sheet contributes its own middle tone. Degas’s attention to practice gives the scene a quieter rhythm than a theatrical dance. A simple training movement becomes a subject with its own precision, revealing how much observation can be held in a single pose.
