Description
Hunched men eat hot food in They Are Hot, their eagerness turning an ordinary meal into a scene of satire. The overheated food becomes an image of appetites that outrun restraint. What first appears to be a small domestic mishap opens into a sharper observation of indulgence and the distance between professed discipline and actual behavior.
Goya’s plate 13 from Los Caprichos combines etching and aquatint to give the gathering a concentrated tonal presence. The scene works through the immediacy of bodies absorbed in eating, allowing its criticism to arise from a recognizable action. Its dark humor remains effective because the subject is so close to everyday experience: the desire for pleasure overwhelms the caution that might make it bearable.
