‘Clear Folly’ from the ‘Disparates’ (Follies / Irrationalities)

Description

Clear Folly by Francisco Goya draws a restless crowd beneath an immense sweep of darkness. Figures bend, reach and turn as the heavy forms overhead press down upon the scene. Bright passages break through the dense lines, making the gathering feel at once theatrical and strangely unstable.

Created around 1815–19 for Disparates, the work combines etching and burnished aquatint to give its shadows a powerful presence. The series first appeared after Goya’s death in 1864. Clear Folly rewards a lingering look: its clustered figures and unsettled space keep drawing the eye from one expressive gesture to another.
