Description
The Great Horse by Albrecht Dürer gives a powerful animal an imposing place within an architectural setting. Seen from behind and at an angle, the horse fills much of the foreground with its broad body and sturdy legs. A richly equipped human figure appears beside it, while walls and openings provide a firm backdrop to the gathering.
Engraved in 1505, the image rewards attention to the animal’s weight, rounded forms and carefully described surface. Dürer contrasts those large masses with finer details of equipment and architecture, creating a composition that feels both solid and intricate. The unusual viewpoint makes the horse’s presence especially persuasive, inviting the viewer to appreciate physical form and scale as the principal drama of the scene.
