Description
Christ lies upon the cross as men bend over his limbs to fasten him to the wood. A larger gathering stands behind the immediate work, bringing weapons, robes and watchful faces into the cramped setting. Tools and a coil of rope appear close to the ground, making the scene’s violence unsettlingly practical.
Albrecht Dürer’s Small Passion design concentrates attention on the vulnerable body and the repeated gestures around it. Bent backs and reaching arms create a dense rhythm, while the cross extends beneath them as a firm diagonal. This woodcut belongs to a later Venice edition of the series, preserving the composition’s direct narrative character. The finely separated details encourage close looking without distracting from the central act of suffering.
