Description
The Entombment by Albrecht Dürer draws a gathering of mourners close around Christ’s body. Figures bend and reach toward the burial place, their overlapping robes and lowered faces giving the scene an intimate weight. A rocky setting encloses the group, while the body’s pale form remains the focus amid the darker figures surrounding it.
Engraved in 1512 for The Passion, the work expresses grief through the practical gestures of carrying, supporting and attending. The dense arrangement lets each movement become part of a shared effort rather than an isolated display. Dürer’s subtle changes of line and shadow separate flesh, fabric and stone, giving the solemn episode both physical presence and a quiet emotional concentration.
