Description
Court Dwarf with Books presents an unidentified sitter with an open book, bringing a particular human figure into relation with reading and learning. The sitter’s name is not securely supplied by the work’s modern title, leaving the encounter open to attention beyond a fixed biography. The book adds a tangible intellectual presence beside a person whose individual bearing remains central.
Goya made this etching in 1778 after Velázquez’s composition. Its printed lines translate the earlier painting into a format that rewards close examination, retaining the meeting between the sitter and the viewer. The image is engaging because it allows social position and material surroundings to coexist with personal presence, giving an unnamed subject more depth than the court role through which history has described him.
