Description

People flee in I Saw It, their movement giving Goya’s witness-like title an urgent human setting. The scene asks the viewer to confront an event rather than a distant account, with the need to escape carrying the immediate meaning. The brief words make what happens feel close to lived experience and difficult to set aside.

Etching, drypoint and burin give Goya several ways to make the printed marks sharp, dense or searching. That varied language suits a subject whose authority rests in attention to what happens to people under pressure. The work remains compelling because witnessing becomes part of its meaning: the image is not only an event represented, but a demand that something seen should also be remembered.
