Description

An older man is restrained beneath an arch while women are attacked behind him in Bitter to Be Present. The foreground witness and the violence beyond occupy the same confined setting, making separation from the event impossible. Goya gives the pain of being present a physical form, where seeing cannot readily become the power to help.

Goya’s etching and burin give the encounter a concentrated visual form, keeping the subject within the scale of human relationships. The work’s force lies in its refusal to make a spectator’s position comfortable. Looking is necessary, yet looking cannot undo what is taking place. That unresolved condition gives the image its lasting urgency, making attention an act with emotional consequences rather than a neutral view from outside.
