Description
Count Duke of Olivares on Horseback is Francisco de Goya’s 1778 etching after Diego Velázquez’s royal portrait. Goya reduces the distant battle and surrounding detail so the mounted statesman, baton raised, dominates the image.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art explains that Velázquez’s painting dates to about 1636 and shows King Philip IV’s prime minister commanding a battle. In Count Duke of Olivares on Horseback, Goya turns that painted court image into a forceful play of etched line, light, and dark.
