Description
An assault gives Neither Do These its immediate human subject, while the title sounds like the continuation of a judgment. Goya connects the people before the viewer with those encountered in neighboring images, making the scene part of a larger pattern. The violence remains particular even as the brief words suggest that it is happening again.
Goya’s etching, drypoint and burin give the printed scene a varied and closely worked presence. The image is compelling through the tension between repetition and recognition: another event may resemble what has happened before, but the people caught in it remain distinct. The title keeps that relationship active, asking the viewer to stay attentive rather than let familiar suffering pass into an anonymous background.
