Description

In No One Has Seen Us, Francisco Goya catches a group of friars drinking together beside a wine barrel. Three faces turn toward the viewer while a fourth figure, seen from behind, raises an ample glass. Their absorbed enjoyment is framed by a darker, almost spectral presence in the background. The close arrangement makes the viewer feel like an unexpected witness to a private indulgence.

Published as plate 79 of Los Caprichos in 1799, the print satirizes the difference between professed restraint and concealed appetite. Its title is undermined by the image itself: the supposedly unseen gathering is displayed for everyone to inspect. Strong etched lines and a restrained tonal field keep the faces and drinking vessels prominent. Goya’s humor depends on this quiet act of exposure rather than on a dramatic confrontation or explicit moral lesson.
