Description
The Ballet from “Robert le Diable” by Edgar Degas looks toward the stage across a dark foreground of seated men. Beyond their heads, pale dancers move through an atmospheric setting of arches and columns. Their light costumes seem to flicker against the deep browns and greens of the theater.
The contrast between the solid foreground figures and the distant movement gives the scene its distinctive rhythm. Faces turn in different directions, while the stage remains a luminous world apart. Degas makes the act of watching part of the spectacle, placing the viewer within the theater rather than offering an unobstructed view of the performance.
