Description
Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zuñiga (1784–1792) stands at the center of Francisco de Goya’s portrait in a brilliant red suit, its color set against a quiet, shadowed background. A pale sash and delicate lace frame the child’s small figure, while his steady gaze gives the formal portrait an intimate presence.
The animals introduce a more restless story at his feet. Cats watch a magpie held by a fine cord, and a nearby cage contains small birds. Their alert attention contrasts with the boy’s stillness. The inscription along the lower edge remains part of the composition, preserving the portrait’s identification of its young sitter.
