Description
Narcisa Barañana de Goicoechea appears in Francisco de Goya’s portrait wrapped in black lace, with vivid blue ribbons rising above her hair. A soft pink flower at her neckline and the golden upholstery of her chair bring small, luminous accents to the dark clothing.
Her turned pose and direct gaze give the portrait a composed, personal character. Goya balances the delicacy of the lace against broad passages of shadow, drawing attention to the face and folded hands. The varied textures of ribbon, fabric and upholstery lend richness to the otherwise restrained setting.
