Description
The Adoration of the Shepherds gathers a closely woven group around the infant beneath a high, shadowed arch. Raised arms, tilted faces and richly colored robes carry the eye upward toward the angels, while pale cloth brings a quiet glow to the center of the scene.
In this work attributed in the collection to El Greco, elongated figures and flickering passages of light give the familiar subject an urgent, visionary character. The deep architectural setting and sweeping gestures create a sense of movement that reaches from the foreground to the sky.
