Description
The Standard Bearer presents Floris Soop with a commanding gaze, a broad feathered hat and a richly embroidered sash. Rembrandt van Rijn sets the figure against a shadowed background, allowing the light on his face and the warm gold of his costume to draw the eye.
The long staff gives the portrait a strong diagonal, while the sitter’s gloved hand and dark clothing balance the brighter passages above. The Standard Bearer combines the outward ceremony of a formal portrait with the quiet immediacy of an individual presence.
