Description

Clement de Jonghe sits broadly facing the viewer, a loose cloak and hat giving the figure a substantial outline within a light room. A hand rests near the torso, keeping the gesture close rather than expansive. Rembrandt makes the named printseller a self-contained presence, allowing the sitter’s bearing to carry the portrait without surrounding him with the objects of his business.

Made in 1651 with etching, drypoint and engraving, the portrait brings a printseller into the medium of his own trade. Rembrandt concentrates on the sitter as a person rather than surrounding him with an inventory of wares. The image’s measured arrangement gives the likeness a self-contained character, making the named profession context for an encounter carried by the body and face.
