Portrait of a Man

Description

Portrait of a Man presents a quietly self-possessed sitter beneath a wide black hat. In this work associated with Rembrandt van Rijn, a broad white collar frames the illuminated face, setting its warm flesh tones against the dark clothing.

The hat’s sweeping outline and the strong geometry of the collar give structure to the portrait. The restrained background keeps attention on the sitter’s eyes, while touches of light on his hands and cuffs bring the lower part of the composition into focus.
