Description
Madame Thadée Natanson (Misia Godebska, 1872–1950) at the Theater by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec brings the viewer close to an absorbed profile amid the bustle of a theatrical setting. Selective passages of color give the principal figure weight, while lightly drawn forms keep the surrounding space open and animated.
Blue sketch lines remain visible across the warm tan ground, allowing the development of the composition to become part of its appeal. Drapery, furnishings and loosely indicated figures suggest a social world caught in passing rather than arranged into a formal portrait.
