Description

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec places Yvette Guilbert in a full-length profile at the right of a large passage of text. Her long checked dress gives the standing figure a distinct surface, while the writing occupies much of the neighboring space. The arrangement connects a performer’s visible presence with the literary form of the album, making image and words share one page.

Dated 1894, the museum album combines a lithographed cover with sixteen olive-green crayon lithographs. Gustave Geffroy supplied the writing, while André Marty and L’Estampe Originale published the project. Those distinct contributions brought text and image together around the singer’s identity. Toulouse-Lautrec’s work gives performance a lasting graphic counterpart, preserving a particular artist within the world of print. The represented design belongs to that album context, without standing for an offer of the complete publication.
