Description
La Berceuse by Vincent van Gogh shows Augustine Roulin seated in a wooden chair, holding a cord in her loosely clasped hands. Her green clothing and orange-red hair stand out against a densely patterned floral background, while the title evokes the soothing act of rocking a cradle.
The sitter’s steady pose anchors a lively arrangement of curving stems, pale flowers, and strong outlines. Warm red flooring and the wooden chair balance the greens, giving the portrait an intimate, enveloping presence.
