Description
Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night Over the Rhône spreads a luminous blue sky above the river at Arles. Stars shine in pale yellow clusters, while the lights along the opposite bank descend into the water as long golden reflections. A couple stands near the foreground shoreline, giving a human scale to the broad night view.
Painted in 1888, the scene explores the richness of color after dark. Van Gogh uses different blues to distinguish sky, water, and land, with warm lights bringing them into balance. The measured curve of the bank and the still figures give the painting a quieter rhythm than his later, swirling Starry Night.
