Description
In View of Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme, roofs and garden walls gather around a diagonal street beneath a broad, pale sky. Degas gives this town view its character through the close fitting of buildings and the quiet spaces between them.
Muted reds, greens and warm grays create a gentle rhythm across the scene. The empty roadway opens the composition, drawing attention to the shapes and textures of an everyday place. The work is by Edgar Degas.
