Description
Youth in an Attitude of Defense by Edgar Degas shows a figure turning sharply, one arm lifted and the other extended as if responding to an unseen opponent. Light pencil contours trace the back, shoulder and legs, leaving much of the warm paper open.
Made in 1859–60, the drawing captures a poised moment between stillness and action. Degas’s economical line makes the twist of the body easy to follow while preserving the tentative energy of a working study.
