Description
In Figures Waking from Sleep, reclining, drowsy figures occupy a scene whose title tentatively identifies them as waking from sleep. Their bodily stillness leaves the moment uncertain, somewhere between rest and renewed awareness. Goya makes that in-between condition engaging through people whose postures disclose something visible without explaining the experience behind it.
The drawing from the Images of Spain album combines brown wash with touches of chalk, giving the figures a fluid and lightly resolved presence. Its appeal rests in the uncertainty retained by the subject itself. Rather than turning the gathering into a clearly stated event, the image invites attention to a pause in ordinary life, where bodies remain close to the ground and the difference between sleeping and waking is still difficult to settle.
