Plate 78 from ‘Los Caprichos’: Be Quick, They Are Waking Up (Despacha, que dispiertan)

Description

Be Quick, They Are Waking Up by Francisco de Goya fills a dark interior with hunched, strange figures and hurried activity. Bent backs, clustered hands and sharply lit faces give the scene an atmosphere of secrecy and unease.

Dense shadows make the pale forms stand out, while the compressed arrangement leaves little room to escape the action. The urgent caption adds to the sense that something is happening just before discovery.
