Description

The Tomb Erected by Maximilian appears beside the imperial treasury and a procession of ancestral portraits in this sheet from The Arch of Honor. Deeply carved-looking columns and dense lines give the small architectural scenes a surprising sense of grandeur.

Albrecht Altdorfer designed the two scenes celebrating Maximilian, Hans Springinklee the portraits, and Albrecht Dürer the columns. The combination of monuments, precious objects and genealogy makes remembrance itself the subject of this elaborate woodcut.
