Description
At Eternity’s Gate shows a seated man bent forward, his face hidden in his hands. Vincent van Gogh gives the figure a heavy, grounded presence through the dark folds of his clothing, while the surrounding pale space heightens the emotional force of the pose.
This transfer lithograph dates to November 26–27, 1882, during an early period of Van Gogh’s experiments with printmaking. The blunt contours and concentrated gesture make distress palpable without elaborate narrative. Van Gogh returned to the subject in an oil painting in 1890, but the lithograph retains its own stark intimacy.
