Description
A back-turned woman occupies the right of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s Elles cover, her hands raised toward her head. The long skirt makes her body a dark presence beside the lighter fabric and objects around her. The represented monochrome view concentrates on differences of tone, allowing posture and a few surrounding forms to establish an intimate interior scene.
Dated 1896, this impression is printed in brown-black on laid Japan paper, folded at its margins and center to form a cover. Gustave Pellet published the portfolio, with Toulouse-Lautrec responsible for its design. The physical format distinguishes this object from later frontispiece and poster editions of the image. The work connects pictorial invention with the practical shape of a publication, preserving one design whose purpose is both visual and structural.
