Description
In Waking Up, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec places a pale head toward the right, resting on a pillow and partly emerging above the blanket. Broad bedcovers extend toward the left, making their folds share the image with the smaller facial presence. The arrangement gives the bed an expansive surface while keeping the human figure quietly central to the scene.
Dated 1896, this lithograph was printed in drab green on wove paper. Its restricted color gives the scene a restrained surface, distinguishing it from the brighter publicity images associated with the artist. Toulouse-Lautrec preserves the subject through a medium that can sustain repeated looking, giving a passing moment a lasting graphic form. The design belongs to his attention to private interiors, where a small change in activity can become a rich pictorial encounter.
