Description
The Bathers by Paul Cézanne brings groups of nude figures together beneath tall trees that lean inward over a broad landscape. Seated, reclining and standing bodies gather beside blue water, while warm earth and pale skin contrast with the cool greens and blues around them. The sloping trunks form a triangular frame, linking the figures with the setting.
This composition is the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s The Large Bathers, dated 1900–1906. Cézanne revisited bathers throughout his career, and the museum identifies this unfinished work as his largest treatment of the theme. The balance between bodies, trees and open space allows the group to feel part of the landscape rather than an illustration of a single story.
